I'm a fairly musical guy, I play guitar, piano, and flute, but I want to move into recorder. I've played a couple of alto recorders, and I've got a cheap Soprano, but I really like the way an alto sounds. Is it worth buying a fairly cheap plastic alto recorder if I just want to have fun, and not be too serious at it?

I can play a bit on them, but would I be able to teach myself to get better? Is there any good websites out there for beginners?

 Thanks a lot!!!!

Could you please email any replies?

The best place on the web for recorders is Nicholas Lander's "Recorder Home Page". This is at:

 http://www.iinet.net.au/~nickl/recorder.html

If you decide to buy a decent plastic recorder, the best you can get is the Yamaha 300 Rottenburg Series. Here are the details:

 YRS-302B Soprano (Descant) plain
 YRS-312B Soprano (Descant) simulated rosewood
 YRS-314B Soprano (Descant) simulated ebony

 YRA-302B Alto (Treble) plain
 YRA-312B Alto (Treble) simulated rosewood
 YRA-314B Alto (Treble) simulated ebony

The altos are more expensive than the sopranos. The simulated wood are more expensive than the plain, but sound the same. The simulated rosewood is really nice. I got one for my daughter and everyone is very impressed with the look of it. It also plays beautifully and is better than the cheapest wood recorders, which would cost at least three times the price.

A good mail order company is John Myatt in England:
