Just for my investigative purposes, how do you guys think you should do a diminuendo? (Torus don't answer first, or everyone will copy you...hehe)

1.Faster air
2.Intensified, but smaller stream of air
3.Air stays the same
4.Less Air

well you should never do number four, you should always have lots of air. whenever i think of a decrescendo i always start a little louder(fast air) then lower the volume(slower air) but still keeping the same amount just slowing it down to desired volume. does this make sense?

Well that depends on the requirements of the piece.
Overally you've mentioned the basic aspects of a good diminuendo with the flaw as mentioned by Theboy_2.
Just remember that air speed controls volume so to do a good diminuendo you have to pratise frequently to be constant and stable in your cres. decres phrases.

Well, I don't know if it's really right or not....my band director always says to get lower you still need to have fast air and just control your volume with a fast air speed. And, also, says that the lower you get the more/faster air you should push b/c some people tend to drop their air when they play lower. It works for my band, I don't know about y'all. So, I would guess that that's right.

I use the same amount of air and the same speed, i just made my lips in a smaller hole (for flute, I haven't figured out any other instruments yet)

hmmm
seems to be a tough discussion, but nice....
i think the proper ideology of crescendos and decres is that they should always be changing (every milisec. in dynamic). that of course depends greatly on the conductor or composer's requirements but i think there should be a standard to it. i'm not really sure on the best way on doing it..... any comments?

I believe I'll choose answer #2, Alex. What is an intensified but smaller stream of air?
