are the fingerings for the e flat clarinet the same as a b flat clarinet? I want to stand out from the ten other clarinets in my band, and also distinguish me as the section leader above and beyond. good or bad idea?

The basic fingerings for the Eb clarinet are the same. But you will find that it is very difficult to keep it in tune, particularly in the altissimo register, so you will have to experiment with a lot of different fingerings for your clarinet to get a set that work for you.

Yes. The E Flat and B Flat clarinets are fingered the same as each other. I am the same way. I wanted to stand out and I worked hard and practiced and took up the E Flat and I've been 1st chair since my freshmen year.
