I been in this terrible rut lately...the cane I've been using will lose it's sheen after only 5-6 days of playing on it. On monday I had a decent reed, and I performed on it, and it went well...now today (Saturday), I can hardly make a sound on the wretched thing! Maybe I'm oversoaking, or overscraping...what's the problem?

Really that's about how long my reeds last as well, at least as long as they last and still sound good. However after 5-6 days most reeds should still at least play, albeit with a worse tone and limited dynamic range. It might be that you're overscraping the cane, or it might just be the type of cane you're using isn't very resilient. About how much do you play a day?
If it's literally hardly making a sound, I immediately begin to think about leaks in the reed. For some reason that happens to my reeds a lot; after a week of playing on them, especially if I let them sit for a few days afterwards, I go back to play on them and they're leaking tons of air out of the sides.

I play about 2 hours a day usually, more if I have the time.

Try using a Fibracell reed. Recommended to me by an outstanding tenor sax player. Have been using the same reed almost daily for 5 months with excellent reed response. Cost a little more (about $9 for tenor sax) but very economical in the long run. Available thru Brass&Woodwinds.
