I am a private ww teacher and have come accross a puzzlement. I have a new student with an open-hole Gemeinhardt flute with a B-foot. Key holes for fingers 3 & 6 have factory-provided plastic plugs. F# can only be fingered with finger 5 and not 6, as is normal. Fingered with #6 an F natural is produced. She claims that Gem. co. explained to her that F# cannot be fingered with finger 6 on the flute with the B-foot. Is this so? If not, what can I do, if anything, to correct the problem (in a studio setting, w/o special tools, etc.)? Also, her hands are now large enough to cover all of the finger keys - should I remove the hole plugs? How can I do so, without risk of damaging any keys or mechanism?
