 Help on Faure
Author: MalaysianFlute

I'm currently practicing Faure's Fantasie. Can anyone give me some advise on how to double tongue fast enough for the passages? Do I really have to play tempo=144? Anyone has played slower than that tempo before? How much slower?
Thanks.

Work on double-tonguing should be done every day. Play an etude or study with a lot of articulation everyday. First slur the whole thing, then single tongue it (TTTT) then back-tongue the entire piece (KKKK) then double-tongue (TKTK) then reverse (KTKT). Work up from a slower speed, say 100 or so, then when you can manage that, move up the metronome to 104 then 108 and so on. When you get it very fast, KKKK will be impossible to do, so just skip that one.

Vary the articulations (slur two tongue two, tongue two slur two, tongue one slur three, etc) on etudes, studies, and scales.

Work on articulated excerpts, like Mendelssohn's Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream. Even though this is in 3/8, you can double tongue it (or triple tongue it if you prefer.)

Remember, you can only play with the technique you have TODAY. If you can't play it at 144, who cares? We're not perfect, and there's nothing you can do to BE perfect. Work with the technique you have, and getting up to 144 is a good goal, but if you can't play it at that tempo, don't worry about it. If you keep working, someday you will be able to. There's no magic trick to getting better, just practice.

yeah, it took me FOREVER to get all of the fingerings down in the "acidental passage", but now it's the part I can play the fastest! you just have to take it very slow. I'm still having a hard time double-tonguing but I find that I can single tongue and play it at about 120, so I guess, just keep working. And Amanda has great advice!
