I play Bass Clarinet in class and orchestra currently.
The teacher is letting me switch instruments in January and I want to know what YOU think I should choose: Oboe or Bassoon (I will still play Bass Clarinet in orchestra while learning the new instrument on the side).

Maybe bassoon...i play the oboe and 3 years ago when i switched from clarinet to oboe it was a terrible experience. Although the bassoon wouldnt be any much more similar to the clarinet compared to the oboe, it would certainly be better. But then, is there really a need to learn a new instrument?

I think learning a new instrument is good(provided you have the time) and it also makes you more versatile. For me if I were to pick between oboe and bassoon I'd rely on which inst. requires less air support(as I can't hold a note for long), but if it dosen't matter to you then I suggest you should look at their fingerings. See which one is easier. If you'd like a challenge you shld pick the harder inst.
I like the sound of the bassoon better. Cute. But my friend keeps screwing up the fingering though.. Don't know if you can do it.

I think maybe bassoon coz both the bass clarinet and the bassoon have similar parts, they play mostly bass parts. Why don't you try clarinet?

Why don't I try clarinet?! That is the last thing I am going to do. 1) I have already played it, 2) A lot of other people play it 3)It is almost the same as the bass clarinet.

Hi, I know this is going to bias (toward Bass Clarinet) But I play Bassoon and have experience on oboe, but I am essentially a clarinet player. If you really want to learn something new, I would go for bassoon. As it is closer to Bass Clari (music wise parts are often very similar) However bass Clari is (most of the time) written in Treble Clef, changing clefs isnt much of a drama, but it can be alittle daunting.
But (I told u this is bias) if you really want to to play more than one instrument I would suggest that you maybe double on Eb Alto Clarinet or Bb Soprano would be nice too. Doubling is always alittle more challenging, But you dont have to learn a different clef, different fingering, learn to play with a double reed ect ect.
