i posted this earlier under another persons topic but i really did have a question
i have heard that there is a way to "treat" (or start" or "prepare") a reed when you first buy it...it was like:
prep the reed
play on it for 30 minutes
dont play on it for about a week
i heard that something like this will actually increase the life of your reed
has anyone ever heard of this before?
do i have it wrong?
is there a different way?

well you have some incorect items. For example to increase the usage of your reed you have to dry it off after using it.This will keep your reed sterdy. If you dont dry your reed it will be easy to break. Also it is best to practice every day.This will improve your ability to get use to your instrument.Finally when first using a reed you have to put it in your mouth to get it wet to start at an easy pase.

Use reeds as normal....There is no fancy treatment, it is a reed. If it doesnt work buy another one, when it breaks buy another one. But always keep 2 spare, and keep them in a reedgard, so they dont crinkle. Also, keep it in your mouth when you are putting your instrument together. Saliva works better than water.
