i'm in a marching band too and what i've seen is that there are a lot of flutes and not a lot of piccolos. yet you can here the piccolo farthur than the flute. It's all up to you but i'd recomend the flute because there are more pieces made for the flute than the piccolo and more people are familiar with the flute.

Piccolo would be good if there wasnt any in you marching band because its really loud and if you have 2 or more piccs. out of tune ......yeah well, unlike by marching band we have Four of them so the flutesection can be louder but they have to practice alot to be in tune with the rest of the band. A tip is that is you do play piccolo its most likely always going to be sharp so pull out the head joint or roll in.
Hope this helps.

Piccolos are not nesicarely "Loud." The main thing about Piccolo is that it is High and sound pericing. If you know how to properly play the piccolo you shouldent half to play "Loud" you should be able to blend with the band as if it was a flute or as if it did not exist and still be able to play the notes.

along the same lines as Stephen, the only reason the piccolo seems loud is because the frequency of vibration(how many times per second it vibrates) is much higher than that of any other instrument. The tuba operates around, the low 100's(Hz) and the piccolo operates in the 1000's(Hz), to give you a spectrum. The piccolo's high A (on top of fourth ledger, and then an octave up) clocks in at about 1760Hz, where as the tuba's pedal Bb clocks in at about 29Hz. That's why the piccolo's sound "pierces" through everybody else's

I agree with Steven. In a band the sound will come out if the band is really in tune. It doesn't necesarrily be LOUD as Saxy boy says, since the piccolo itself has a very special characteristic (IT CAN KILL A PERSON WHO SITS BESIDE U DURING BAND PRACTISE). The frequency is really high despite that it sounds an octave higher than the flute when written. But i suggest if you think you are a really good piccolo player you can try playing it in the marching band. Try listening to more orchestral pieces for piccolo (which there very little), or wind orchestra pieces like 'Prism', which has a very long piccolo solo part.

The piccolo is a very fun instrument to play in the marching band. I play piccolo and there are 9 of us who play in a 240 piece college band and only about 5 of us really play high and we are always heard, you should start practicing high on the piccolo because the low notes are not heard at all trust me.
