 Picking it back up.

I played tenor and bari sax for 10 years over 20 years ago. My question is, I have a friend who wants to give me a Yamaha (Red Plated) Professional Tenor. Seriously, is it possible to pick up playing after being away from it so long? Should I take private lessons, since I would be serious about it, or should I just hunt and press (peck) and play by ear? I would like to be able to play the oldies again. Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated. Prefer you email me with your suggestions. Thank you for your time.

Yes it is quite possible to pick up an instrument after an extended layoff. I didn't play my clarinet for over 20 years. Now I'm one of the first clarinets in the local community band.

It would be a good idea to hook up with a teacher. You'll save yourself a lot of time if you do.

I started playing the oboe again after 30 years off and haven't had this much fun in a long time. I joined a community band in which everyone is quite patient, but I think if you have the time, taking some private lessons would be a big plus to get you back up to where you were more quickly. I've been back at it for about one year now and I would say that I'm just getting to the point where I was. Timing was harder for me than the actual playing.
Good Luck!
Debbie

Yes, i think it is, when i quit playing trumpet for a while, and played sax's, after about 2 years i could still pick up the trumpet and play fully taps, and almost my entire old range (very very large range)
GOod luck!

Hi I am trying to find the fingering chart for TAPS I played the trumpet in the high school marching band but I haven’t played for some time. I was wondering if you could give me the fingering chart for TAPS to play at my grandpa’s funeral.
Thank you matt
