i dont know if its me or my mouthpiece but when i play i cant play in tune. could it be my reed strength i play on a 2 1/2 reed and i have the same mouthpiece from sixth grade it still looks like new and i havent had a problem since i stopped playing it due to injury to my jaw which was only a week. do i need a new mouthpiece or stronger/softer reed? should i get one of those fancy ligatures? if so what should i get please respond soon because im in pit band and our show is coming in a week and a half and i would like time to adjust to the differences thank you soooo much.
***ps:ive always been able to play in tune and its WAY sharp now.

Won't play in tune? It has nothing to do with your reed, mouthpiece, ligatures..etc. Okie, using your tuner, pull out your mouthpiece from the neck of the saxophone if its sharp; push in the mouthpiece if its flat. No sweat. ^_^ Also have your saxophone checked if possible, a faulty saxophone probably won't sound in tune no matter how you adjust your mouthpiece on the neck. Hope this helps.

you might have a pad that is not quite covering the tone hole. look over your sax and check all springs and pads. if they do not cover the tone hole completely, you can try to toy around with it on your own or if u cant do anything with it take it to the shop.

If it isn't playing in tune you should move the mouthpiece around the cork. Push in for a sharper note and out for a flater note.

sometimes you have to push your mouthpiece more in, or you have to pull out. Another thing is that if you've been playing on the 2 1/2 reed for along time you should move on to a bigger size reed. You have to get used to the bigger size reeds. It also depends on what saxophone you have, because if its a cheap one it's not going to sound perfect. Oh yea, work on your long tones too.
