Does anybody know how to get the freshman, or anybody else, in a high school band to listen and take marching seriously?

Freshmen... uhgg. The thing that "trains" them the most is other band members. The DM's and teacher can be strict, but if the other members aren't paying attention, neither will the freshmen. They just want to fit in (well most of them) so they will follow the other people.

take them to a competition and make them watch some of the good marching bands ... most freshmen will feel disappointed when ur school doesn't not win anything and after marching in the comp and getting the adwards if u get any ... make them watch themselves mess up

well, I think it has a lot to do with tradition and the upper classmen. If you don't have dedicated members, than the freshman won't be either. I'm a freshmen, and I know just what your talking about. I hate my class. they're just so stupid. lol. but yeah, a couple slaps up side the head from the upper classmen will usually do it. lol.

All you need to do is follow my routine. Embarass the holy snot out of them. Catch every mistake and make it known to everyone. Any freshman or first-year marcher hates being teased and will do everything possible to get better. If that doesn't work, then just threaten the poor kids.

My personal favorite:I will post a sign on your back reading 'I am an embarrasment to the band and myself'.
Then say that you'll make them walk everywhere possible. Just make sure that you keep up with them the entire way.

i dont know if anyone will actually read this, but in our band if you mess up one of the section leaders will give you a butload of pushups for messing up. you can make them walk with books on their heads...with our freshman clarinet he would puff his cheeks when he played and our instructor said maybe if he didnt fix it we could tape popsicle sticks with quartes on the middle to his cheeks so he would be unable to puff.

Hey-
im a freshman in marching band and i thought i could help
look its not that we dont listen but the fact that we're not man(or woman) enough to admit we're having trouble. I love to march but im not good at it at all, my band coaches have yelled at me but i still dont get it. I play clarinet and with 20 clarinets in marching band every thing is a little hard to get a spot int he show. so t o solve your problem instead of asking us to listen threaten us or tell us what we are doing wrong. asking poliely doesnt work trust me...
