I already know flute, (having won scholarships etc), and i am now attempting to learn saxophone (alto). The problem is, I am not taking lessons, not till fall. How do I put on the ligature and reed? Really what i am asking is how to get the reed onto my mouthpiece so that it does not sound horrible... Anyways, Thatnks All!

Here's what I do.
Hold that mouthpiece in your left hand with the table (the flat part) of the mouthpiece facing you. Place the ligature on it first without any tightening and then place the reed on the table while the ligature is still loose. Many beginners line up the reed and then place the ligature on over it but once in awhile you'll miss and split the reed down the middle (it's not hard to do!). Try and line the top of the reed up with the top of the beak of the mouthpiece, make horizontal adjustments to center it up and clamp down that liggy. Attach to neck, blow, and wallah, you're Brecker!
