Ok i've been playing the clarinet for about 3 months and someone told me that i hold my clarinet out too far. I hold it like maybe 4 or 5 five inches above my knees she told me that the bell should be just below the knee level and someone else told me to hold it at a 40 degree angle( hello! like i know where that is exactly!)How me out please!

i've been playing for 5 years and i'm first chair in the top band at my school so i think im pretty good.
i actually hold mine so the bell is between my knees. if you hold the mouthpeice at a greater angle, it vibrates more, producing a better sound. so i would say to bring it back a bit.

Normal position is to have about a 45° angle between the body and the instrument. However this can vary. Someone with a serious overbite will need to have less angle between body and horn. With a serious underbite, they may need more angle.
The 45° generally allows for comfortable hand and arm positions. In addition, it's designed to be held at this angle to properly interact with the embouchure of a normal person. Unless you have one of the conditions mentioned above, you will tend to play flat if the instrument is too far from the body and will tend to play sharp if the instrument is too close to the body.

I think as long as your not holding the clarinet between your knees (like I've seen some people do and it's pretty disturbing) then you can't be doing too much wrong. Another thing, which I'm sure you're not doing, is just make sure that you're not holding the clarinet vertically and your head is like over the mouthpiece and you're blowing downwards...I've also seen this done and not only does it not look right, but the sound you get it horrible...I don't think this answers your question, but it has to do with clarinet positions! :7)

allegra you are holding it perfectly and kyle you're the one who's doing it wrong NEVER HOLD THE BELL BETWEEN YOUR KNEES!!!!!!!!! this can soften your sound so that you have to play louder than you would if you had the bell towards the audience. hope this helps

NOBODY is 'wrong' per se. you have to hold the clarinet in the fashion that it is comfortable with you. also hold so that you look straight forward with the mouth piece in your mouth. let me re-phrase that... sit up straight and bring the clarinet up to your mouth. don't put your head do to the audience. that way it should be comfortable and all your sound isn't going into your knees or the floor.

clarient is a tricky subject where to hold the clarinet. when i play jazz with the clarient, you need to hold it out more, from the body 65 above degrees, so the sound projects out. when playing chamber/classical, down to 37-45 degrees. when in marching, i have the clarinet out around 55 degrees. it all depends on what you need and what is generally preferred. there is no proper place to have your clarinet, although generally 90 degrees is to far, and zero is too less. generally, clarinet between your knees is about as low as it should go(assuming school band) and about an inch above the knees is as high as you should go. there is no wrong in music, just another way to perform. hope this helps.

Thank all of you very much!!!
What i also found out was that my band can't hear us clarinets play and to us, we are playing loud. I found out by all of you that the problem is that we are holding our clarinets too low. We need to hold it higher,projecting the sound out to the rest of the band instead of the floor. So again thank you very much for your help.
