You don't HAVE to learn the flute before the piccolo, however the piccolo requires a faster air stream and has more intonation problems then a flute does. It is more advisable to learn the flute first and then progress to piccolo at the disgression of a teacher etc. In response to your second question, yes the piccolo can play flute music, the only exception being if the flute piece descends below low D as the piccolo cannot play low Db/C/B. Hope this helps -Derek

also about the second question, dont forget, the piccolo plays an octave higher, and sometimes in a band, you might not want the sometimes screeching high notes of the piccolo!

I think that you should defiently learn to play the flute BEFORE you play the piccolo. The flute embouchure is difficult to attain, but the piccolo emboucchure is even worse. Also, with a flute you can blend in with the rest of the band. However, with a piccolo, the music is an octave higher, therefore any mistakes or intonation problesm are heard by EVERYONE.

DEFINITELY play the flute first. This is my first year on piccolo after playing the flute for 4 years and its hard for me now. You may not like it, but it'll help.
