I saw that some ppl had said NEVER buy an insturment w/o having played it first, but I'm wanting to get one off of Ebay or something like that. That is where I got my clarinet and I LOVE it and also I got a beg. trumpet and it's okay, not the best brand at all but hey.....It seems like the majority vote is either for Selmer or Yamaha. If you had to pick which one would it be a what kind of model....

Alicia,
I can't stress it enough...test playing a horn first is the most important thing. That's awesome that you got a clarinet off of Ebay that you ended up really liking, but that was just luck. Someone might tell you Brand A is the best brand out there, but maybe you'll play it and not care for it. The brand that works best for you is the brand that is best. Period. That's why it's important to test instruments on your own, because you'll never know what works for you unless you try it. Good horns to start your search with would be Selmer and Yamaha, but if you're just starting to play and you've never had sax experience before, you might want to check out Vito or like brands for cheaper beginner instruments that aren't total crap....if the price seems like a steal, it's probably a rip off. If you have any other questions, let us know. We're all happy to help you out.

Carolyn,
Thanks so much for your post. I have played sax before alto to be exact but I've just "played" around on tenor. I've done search on Yamaha and Selmer sites and it seems that Yamaha would be the best. With my clarinet I knew to get a Buffet so that was all good. My dad is helping me on price he knows about all that stuff so that's no worry, but it was just other player's opions I was wondering. But I'm think of going with the Yamaha YTS-23. It's the lowest of the models but I think it will work for my experience.

If anyone else has any suggestions I'll take 'em!

clarinets- definitely buffets, yamahas, or howarths
saxes- selmers, yanagisawas, yamahas
remember that this applies to their upper range varieties
which doesnt include their beginning line branches
yamaha doesnt have a branch
their beginner models are known to be the best

There is no such thing as *the best brand*

Personally, I like the Modern Selmers better than the Yanagisawas, and the Yani's better than the Yamaha, but that's just me. If I could pick a tenor, I'd chose the Reference 36. If I had $4500 that is, or the Series II for $3300 or so

For overall value, I'd chose the Yanagisawa 991,992,901,or 902; ranging from @$1900-$3200

For extremem value, I'd take the Jupiter 889 Artist Tenor, which can be found for as little as $1300 new.

But that's just me

Look out for a Vito from the 1990's which will have been manufactured by Yamaha and is identical to the YTS 23 at a much lower cost.

Hope you didn't buy one yet. I just recently went all through this. You should contact Bear at Cybersax.com. He's extremely knowledgeable and fair...
