Hey all!
It's been a while since I've stopped by here, but I've got a question I was hoping to get people's opinions on. My main instrument is the tenor sax (Jupiter Artist Model), but I also have my alto sax (A student Vito), which I started on in 5th grade. I recently got a job this summer, and I was looking to save up for a new sax...but I can't decide if I should upgrade my alto, or if I should get a quality soprano (I was told it would be in my best interest to start practicing soprano now and have one for college, since I want to study jazz). Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

This is all opinionated... but I think you should go for the soprano saxophone. First of all, it's in the same key as tenor, just an octave higher. But also, I'm thinking of John Coltrane now. I mean, his main instrument was tenor sax, but he also played Soprano Sax a little too, most notably "My Favorite Things". Plus, I know a few people that play tenor and soprano saxophone, and they like it.
So you're really into jazz? I think that's awesome, because I'm really into it too! I play classical clarinet, but I LOVE playing jazz piano. So, what type of jazz do you like, who's your favorite jazz musician (saxophonist or not), and how many years have you played jazz for?

I would upgrade the alto. It's definately time to play on a higher-quality instrument. Many saxophone players don't own a soprano, even at the university level. Jazz departments that want you to play it generally own one or two in the instrument shop. Plus compare the prices of a new alto versus a new soprano. . . If you do want to start practicing on the soprano and your school doesn't have one, talk to local music stores about renting one. Since you don't need to really learn a new instrument all over, just learn the tendencies of the soprano, you won't need to rent it for too long, maybe a few months at a time.

If I were in the same situation (which I'm not), I would look for an alto upgrade.
