I did a version of Sweeny at Baltimore's Center Stage. It was a Stravinskyesque version for:violin, bass, bassoon, horn and Clarinet/flute and synth/conductor. This was 15 min of straight clarinet playing punctuated by bunches of really hard "legit" flute type solos. It was a Blast!! We were in an elevated "sky pit" 8 shows a week.
1. Yamaha Sev clarinet, with Zebrawood bell, cocobola barrel, hand faced Berger/zinner $3500
2. Prima Sankyo flute, with Backun undercut head joint $700 (great ebay deal)
3. Never having to count more than 3 bars rest PRICELESS!!!!

I think I will be playing a "reduced" pit as well. ...I'm assuming me on clarinets and flute and a string player or two and rhythm section . From what I've checked out, the clarinet is quite prominant .

Get a hold of the original 1979 CD OBC. We had a ball with the cast, and it's one of Sondheim's best recorded B'way shows.
Check it out,

Well, the first week of SWeeney is done and the second week starts Wednesday. At first, I was not having a very good time with Sweeney. They had me playing books 1 and 2....and I mean playing...as in "measures 1-30 in book one then 34-74 in book 2 then at 76 back to book"....well you get my drift. Anyway, the show grew on me and as I slowly get my own act together, I can appreciate the show more....and it is fun....in a strange sort of way ! By the way, I stumbled on a neat trick....occasionally, the pit was so dark, I couldn't find the pegs on my intrument stand during changes. I noticed a stage guy "charging up" little pieces of "glow"tape with a flash light, marking out positions on the stage. He put a couple little pieces in the tops of my pegs, and they glowed just enough to let me see them in the deep, dark pit.

I just heard some of the new Sweeney Todd recording with Patti LuPone. In this production, all of the actors ARE the orchestra. Most of them double up on something. And Patti LuPone actually plays the tuba!
They re-orchestrated the show especially for this production and cut it down from an orchestra of twenty-something to a cast of 10 or 12.
I didn't think it was as good a production as the original cast recording, but it's interesting to hear if you get a chance. I'd love to see it on stage.

Next show SWEENEY TODD for Garden City Productions -- fall 2008.
