Well, if you gouge thicker, it WILL make everything thicker, but often times you have to scrape so much more off that it compromises the structural integrity of the reed, and thus works against you.
I used a Ross machine back in college. There were always things that I questioned, such as "Why can't I get this (certain quality) into the sound of my reeds? Do I really need to manipulate my embouchure that much to get that effect? How do I get my opening smaller/more to be just right? etc. etc. etc."
Now that I've switched to a double radius, I'm so much happier. It takes a bit of work to learn how to adjust them, and get to know them really well, but the options are so much more, and I can adjust my machines to the exact way I wish. I can get any "qualities" by changing the sides, the shape of the curve, the amount of thickness down the internal spine (which is the result of the double radius, etc.
A great website I recently found which shows a lot of different stuff about gouging is Larry Mueller's Oboist's Workshop. Definitely worth a look.
