My rule of thumb is that the cane should close evenly on both sides of the staple one turn before the top of the staple. The last turn cinches down the seal firmly without springing open the edges further up.
This length will vary depending on the shaper and on the opening of the staple, but unless all your staples fit the mandrel the same way, you will still need to make a correction for each reed. Since all staples from a maker are not all alike, it is worth the extra effort to sit down with a large box of staples and buy 20 or so which fit your mandrel the same way.
Then determine the correct length once by trial and error, measure the result, and mark your cane in the future...
I used my (Westwind) Brannen-X tip and marked my cane at 28mm from the fold for use on Lorée tubes. A 'real' Brannen-X tip will vary from tip to tip, so you'll need to do a trial & error approach until you find the 'perfect' length...
