There are many ways of playing the oboe and of making reeds and you can develop your own style with the help of a good teacher. I have to play on the very tip of my American scrape reeds, which have stable C crows on the tip and the thread. It makes tuning easy and no biting of the reed is needed with a rounded embouchure. Reed stability is very important to me but many oboists don't seem to be attentive to it. An advanced oboist can play on the tip or with more of the reed in the mouth, but I believe the starting oboist will do better playing with a minimum of the reed in the mouth.
