Hey, thought people might be interested to hear what happened at the opera! I did end up putting the hard case of the EH under my bell, and I moved my stand to the side a bit and was able to angle myself between the cellos (thus gaining more or less access to the opening above) the strings in this production were all out in the opening, while the winds were under the stage lip (all down in the pit of course)
The opera (rigoletto) has a wonderful trio where the cellist plays a rapidly moving underscore, and the EH and baritone are very close both in pitch and rhythm. I am not a wimpy player, but this baritone was shaking the rafters (Mark Walters, check him out). At any rate, everyone seemed quite pleased with the end result- several people commented that they didn't realize I was playing EH til they heard it - sadly, I was only listed as oboe - so obviously it was coming through ok!
Craig- just wanted to thank you for posting the lovely examples of your playing! I have never had ANY problem being heard in church, or recitals or whatever. Has come up in huge orchestral things, glad I was able to make this work! Thanks to all.
