I have always been taught to just learn to used the forked F (then left fingering for the altissimo).

I resisted using the fork F for ages because of its windy sound on my Lorée. Now that Laubin (Teitelbaum) fixed it up so wonderfully, I find the forked F to be the most amazing invention!
