A great loss...
I studied oboe with Mr. Rapier one summer while I was at I.U. Bloomington. He encouraged me to always challenge myself with oboe works and to never get into thinking, "oh, I'm not ready for this piece or that piece yet." His approach was size it up and take it on - in other words, you can do just about anything that you make up your mind to do. That always stuck with me, although I only studied with him a short time!
