I might also add that if your friend is playing alto sax parts on an english horn he has learned transposition that will help him if he ever plays french horn. I play both oboe and french horn.
Eb alto is in key of Eb and English horn is in key of F. To play the alto sax part on english horn he has to transpose each note down a step...i.e. the also sax written C note is the english horn written Bb note.
On french horn we are often called upon to play french horn in Eb parts which also requires down a step transposition on the french horn which is in key of F. Years ago there were french horns in key of Eb---some single french horns have a separate slide (tubing) to move the horn into Eb key from it's normal key of F.
