I would humbly suggest to you that when and if you do buy reeds from those professional makers out there, keep a detailed notebook about what you like/don't like about the reeds, and their basic structure. This way, you'll be able to narrow down which reed suit the way you play best.

Check the reed's response (easy, hard, clean tonguing), timbre (bright, warm, dark, etc), look at the reed's profile (side view), length.
Also your experience with the reed-maker: professional, sent order on time, safely packaged. If you have a teacher, you might ask him/her for sources: I've seen some nice reeds made by people not on 'reed reviews'.
If, after you've soaked and tried a reed, you get a 'lemon', contact the maker and let them know. I'm sure they appreciate any helpful feedback.
