Re: Shaper Tips for Marigaux 901

Mark -- In the higher altitude of the Rockies I used a slightly wider shape on my Marigaux 2001. This was useful in encouraging a slightly larger opening in the reed, which is helpful here because of the thin air and the dryness of the air. I did not notice that that increased stability over a narrower shape, however. If anything, the narrower one was more stable unless my overlap was huge. I gained stability through protecting the thickness of the spine, including some semblance of spine in most of the length of the tip.
So much of the decision about the shape depends upon what staple you are using -- I used Stephens Pro 2 or Chudnow's CA staples, both of which also supported a wider reeed opening. My reeds were horrible when I brought them to sea level -- with much too much taken out of them and with much too wide an opening.
The thickness of the gauge is also a factor.
