Dear All
Thanks for the help. I've done lots of considering and head scratching. The current plan, (I'm now on about plan Q having gone through the rest of the alphabet) is to get a student instrument for now, and then get a second hand pro one when I can play the thing well enough to see if I like them or not. Although very true that the players of the past were quite capable of the most difficult Mozart without all the fiddly keys we indulge in, I am more in favour of an easy life! Actually, when I started playing the trombone I was fairly sure what I wanted to play on it. I was wrong. The instrument wants to play certain things too, I didn't get a lot of say in it. I suspect the oboe might have a similar temperament so I would like to aim for something that will let me do anything. Then at least I know all faults and limitations are with me!
I'll be back with more questions soon I am sure. Chief among them probably, how do I put it together. Can't get a teacher until I get a new contract and know where I will be living, so it might be a few months while I do temping to fill in the gaps. Brace your selves for some really dumb queries!
