1-I have never changed pads before. From the olden days I have heated a key and replaced a loose pad on my clarinet but never really re-padded.
2-I have no idea what shape the tone holes are in. This is an old plastic Armstrong that I paid all of $200 for so who knows.
3- I'd just like to get it in better shape than it is now. Some of the pads are really ragged around the edges and one is gone. When I got it the whole thing was covered in dust and grime. I cleaned up what I could with a tiny paint brush but I'm fighting the urge to just take it apart and really clean it up and try to fix it as best I can so that perhaps it will play a little better. My goal would be to get it to play all the notes and in tune. I hope to be able to save to get something much better within the next year, but meanwhile, if I can improve this one I'd like to try.
What materials do I need other than pads? I've ordered some specifically for an Armstrong. I have the Sawicki book on adjustment which has been a godsend in getting this thing to even play.
If this is something that is beyond normal capabilities then I'll just try to replace the one pad that is gone. It does play now, but not very well. I look on this as a learning experience both musically and mechanically but I don't want to ruin the thing either.Oh, but I am fighting the urge to take it apart...
