short piece for A clarinet and piano?
Author: PeterinToronto 2017

Hi everyone,

A student will need a short and not-too-hard piece for A clarinet. She's already played the Schumann Fantasy Pieces, and one of the Romances is a possibility. I thought I remembered the Ibert Aria being for A clarinet, but it looks like it's for Bb.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Peter Stoll (University of Toronto)

An arrangement of Rachmaninov's Vocalise (by Stanley Drucker, I believe). Superb!

I can e-mail an A clarinet transposition to Elgar: Salut D'Amour.

Can't figure out how to add it as an attachment.

Is this for a program demonstrating the different clarinets? If so, either of the first two pieces in Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet call for A Clarinet. Or is the involvement of a piano necessary?

How short is short???? the Douglas Lilburn sonatina for clarinet and piano (A clarinet) is about 9min long, but any of the 3 movements can stand alone (or, 2nd mvt + 3rd which would take about 6min....)
1st mvt- 2 bars of technically challenging- arpeggio passages up to alt F
2nd mvt - no technical challenge
3rd mvt - mostly easy, a couple of bars of quite fast stuff
All very beautiful, here's Julianne Kirk-Doyle playing the 1st mvt...

(I hope that link works, it's on youtube as part of her "Dante Dances" but isn't easy to find using the search...)

*link works but it's not clickable, you'll have to cut and paste
