Somebody please run with my design. Its a beginner's ligature that is connected to a mouthpiece cap by a spring loaded rod.
The mouthpiece cap is somewhat open on, say, the left (it could be right) hand side.
The player moves the spring loaded mouthpiece cap out of the way to the right with either a hand or their face and it sits comfortably against a face cheek while they play.
As soon as they take their face away from the instrument, the mouthpiece cap immediately springs back to cover the "1 hour old reed they are about to accidentally destroy in about 2 minutes" without this invention.
I guess the cap can be separated from the ligature to initially place the latter on the mouthpiece with a reed.
:)
P.S. I guess we could add some clasp to prevent the mouthpiece cap from accidentally being bumped out of the way.

If you take 2 min time to accidentally destroy a reed, I feel it might not be so accidental but it sound like a nice idea. Just a thought experiment or are you in experimental / prototype fase?
kind regards

It won't take 2 minutes for the youngster to destroy the reed, if I should have made myself less than clear.
Rather, the reed is destined to be destroyed in subsecond time, in about two minutes....

i'm so sorry, I understood perfectly well ofcourse.
I'd say it's friday.. then my quality of humor always drops.. but we are still so far away from that special day in the week that I must humbly admitt that I have no valid excuse
but definatly interested in your design.
Kind greats
