I'm definitely buying one of these! I'd buy two, but . . . the barrel's raison d'etre is that you only need one.

and the demo video is worth watching.
Well done, Backun team!

That’s quite some innovation. If only it would work more than one day a year!

So, like I expect you Jordan, I became privy to this announcement in an email at exactly one minute after my local time midnight, a dissimilar time zone from Backun's in British Columbia.
Given the bboard's historic propensity for April fools jokes, let me preamble what I have to say with the fact that my reporting is not of such variety, but I wonder if Morrie Backun's is--no disrespect to Morrie intended.
At first, when I looked at the price I asked why someone might pay twice the going rate for a high quality adjustable barrel. The P & S and Chadash ones are half the price, albeit Brad Behn's is also at Morrie's price range.
Then I saw the video with Corrado Guffredi and concluded that either it's worth every penny or a joke.
You see, Corrado's demonstration of the barrel shows that adjustments to it don't change pitch, so much as they change key--as in you can make your Beefer an Eb clarinet, etc.
The reason I believe this may be a joke--we'll just have to see, is anyone worth their weight in salt knows that a clarinet's concert pitch isn't derived simply from barrel length adjustments, but an overall increase or reduction in the instrument's length at all locations along its pipe.
So--we'll see. Corrado only played two octaves each time he adjusted the barrel and I doubt Morrie seeks to create inventions that render his profit stream null and void.
Just released AND out of stock? More like out of this world.

Very interesting gadget. Almost in the too-good-to-be-true category. But it's on the Backun web page. Would take some cojanes to advertise something like that for sale if it doesn't exit. Given that it is sold out, the question has to be whether or ot anyone has actually purchased one. I'm waiting to hear. Otherwise it's an incredibly creative clarinetist practical joke. Got me imagining the level of acoustical engineering it would take to actually invent such a gadget. Or how to produce the same results electronically.
