Thank you so much for putting in all that time and commitment. It's really such an amazing resource for young clarinetists coming through - especially for those who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons. So many people must have benefitted over the years.

I always find it a little odd that, as active as this BB has been, the others here at Woodwind.org are so inactive.

Mark, I don't remember - for how long did this BBoard overlap the old unmoderated listserv, Karinet?

I shut the old mailing list down in 2012, so 13 years of overlap. The mailing basically died as the internet and live posting became popular. I'm surprised (and happy) that this BBoard has survived, as clunky as it is.

Mark,

Thanks for all you have done. I don't post very much, but I read and follow the Board a lot. I consider it a very valuable resource and hope you keep it going for many more years.

Cheers,

Ron

Thanks for all your work to keep this up and running. It is a great BB with an amazing amount of great information. It is an excellent resource for players at all levels.

(I guess I have to post more since I missed the top 10!, LOL)

Hi Mark,

I really love the old-fashioned interface. The new stuff is too flashy and busy and overwhelming. I think part of the reason why this site is so calm, is because the user interface is very peaceful too.

It's great, and I'm so glad to have it.

Jennifer

Congratulations, Mark!

You made a great design that has withstood the onslaught of SPAM, bots, and security concerns. Choosing to use moderators (and choosing the moderators wisely) must have also been key. Well done!

Thanks for sticking with it (and with us) for all these years!

Thanks you for also offering the support you do to bboard participants behind the scenes.

Thanks to the moderators (present and past) who keep things in order; and to the users who keep us all entertained and informed.

Fuzzy

Don Berger! What a lovely old guy he was. Everything he said was positive.

My two favorite parts of this forum are the search feature, and the speed of the search feature.

I strongly suspect such speeds could not be achieved in newer and more graphically equipped forum building engines like Xenforo, which frankly, I just don't think we need.

If this were a bboard on clarinet repair---okay--maybe then a more multimedia experience centered forum software might work well--but it's not. :)

I didn't expect to get the No.1 spot!

Being a technophobe, I do like the relatively simple and no-nonsense format of this forum. Only recently it's been plagued with pop-ups and Google ads that tend to obscure the page which I can't say I'm pleased about, but at least the whole page isn't jumping around like many which are overloaded with more and more ads and videos tend to do which I can't tolerate at all.

I would like to join our other members in thanking and congratulating you, Mark. I am deeply grateful for all I've learned from this board over the years. I also hope I have made my small contribution by asking quite a few questions I have always received an answer to.

It struck me tonight, that in 1999 AOL was the #1 Internet Service Provider.

We mostly used v.90 modems to connect via dial-up over a land line. There were approximately 4500 ISP options, and many of them still charged a per minute fee for connectivity, though an "unlimited" monthly fee was becoming the norm.

It was possible to have a local ISP (which would only work via local calling - unless you wanted to also pay per-minute long-distant telephone charges on top of the per-minute ISP charges.)

With a good connection, most folks would see practical throughput of about 1MB of data in about 5 minutes of download.

The big names in the industry were still "Baby Bells." US West, and AT&T Worldnet were common names.

It was usual to get "kicked off" and have to reconnect. It was also usual to have to dial more than once to establish a good connection.

In that context (as well as others), this bboard has held up remarkably well.

Note: There's an article from February 8, 1999 on CNN.com (roughly three weeks after this bboard started) which details the "The best national and regional ISPs" and provides even more context. Pretty cool, Mark. Pretty cool.

[EDIT: changed "Qwest" to "US West"]

I joined the Bboard almost 11 and half years ago during my mid-teens, and have been a semi-regular poster ever since. Honestly I've learnt so much from here, and probably more than any group on the big social media platforms, which is actually a good thing since I'm not that keen on getting stuck on a Big Tech platform to gain the valuable knowledge here. This Bboard's longstanding success in spite of the rapid evolvement of technology elsewhere is truly a testament of Mark incredible work throughout these years, as well as the contributions by many of my fellow members here, and I couldn't be more grateful to be a part of it. Happy (1 day short of) 24th birthday Clarinet Bboard!!

Josh

I'd like to add my appreciation of the work of the founder and moderators of this BB. It's my daily go-to site, and my life would be a great deal poorer without it. My heartfelt thanks.

Mark, I want to add my huge thanks and appreciation for creating and maintaining this bulletin board. It literally bootstrapped my return to playing clarinet after over forty years away from it. It's been my daily read and a huge source of useful information I didn't get in the eight years as a young musician in those pre-online days. And the simplicity of format and search are hugely appreciated.

- Ken

I've always wondered how come whenever I check the box that says "E-mail replies to this thread, to the address above.", I never get any e-mails. I've double-checked the e-mail address and it's right.

Just out of interest I checked the box with your name and there is no email address shown. In your preferences you can specify if you want your email address to show. I suspect that the default is to not show it.

We've completed 24 years for this BBoard. Feels good - kids grown up and moved away, a second marriage, moved to another country - lots has happened but the board survives.

Google ads keeps the lights on - barely. Servers are pretty cheap nowadays and I use a few - one for the database, one for the web facing stuff, and one for some services.

I haven't had a donation drive in a long time because the ad stuff keeps everything running, but I'm asked once in a while if people can donate. The answer is it's always welcome and appreciated - it allows me & the missus to go out once in a while on you folk. You can use the Woodwind Fingering Guide donation page - it all comes back to me.
