I have been given an old Malerne stencil that needed a full re-pad, which I have completed. The low register plays very well right up to the break, but I cannot play any note higher. Can anyone suggest a possible cause ?

Might there be something block the hole that is covered by the register key?

I removed the register key and ensured that the hole was clear.

Sounds like there might be a leak. How are you checking the pads to make sure they are level? Have you tried a suction test?

That happens with my EJ Arnold clarinet when the A4 and Ab4 keys get stuck fractionally open. They just don't move quite so easily any more, and I sometimes have to press them shut after use.

I have just done the suction test which failed slowly. There must be a slight leak somewhere. Thank you for the suggestion.

Did you get all the needle springs reengaged? I have forgotten one before when taking all the keys off and keys will flop open or shut randomly.
