I have just bought the above clarinet as a restoration project. Does any one know where I might find some information about the instrument. I have found the serial number but , so far, I can’t find source of information as to the age etc. I’m also trying to find out if the keys are nickel or silver before I start cleaning them.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Chances are the keywork is unplated nickel silver which should be easy to determine as it tarnishes a dull greeny-yellowy colour (and may have green, brown, orange or red blotches on it) and will polish to a pale yellow colour when polished by hand using metal polish.
Silver plate (as well as solid silver) usually turns black and will also polish up to a bright shine relatively easily with silver polish and some elbow grease or electrolytic cleaning to remove the tarnish (even from all the nooks and crannies).
Nickel plate on the other hand turns a dull grey colour when it tarnishes and can only be brought up to a bright shine by machine polishing, unless you want to spend an entire age and a half polishing it up all by hand with metal polish.
Metal polish (Brasso, etc.) won't do any harm to the keywork provided it's cleaned off thoroughly afterwards.
