 Boosey and Hawkes 1010 question
Author: Uppingham

I have recently come across a 1963/4 pair of 1010's in fantastic condition. No acton vent and a correspondence connector shape I have never seen before. On the upper joint it is flared out to the bottom rather than being straight. The bottom joint has a straight one as expected. Also they are marked Symphony on top of the crown with Imperial written within the logo. Any information greatly received.

Also..... they have metal tenon caps. Did they put these on in the early 60's??

I call that a ‘fish tail’ connector and have it in my 1010s from around 1968 and 1970. That connector allows you to rotate the alignment of the top and bottom joints to some degree to a position which best suites you while still allowing the connection to work properly. However, the cork on that joint has to be done really well if that is to work properly. I not found that to be the case and think it’s because the arch/curve on the fish tail isn’t correct for all positions, at least on my instruments. Peter Eaton also uses that on his Elites but has always said how carefully the joint mechanism needs to align for the long fingerings to work, which rather defeats the point of having the fishtail.

Because the curve on the fishtail is less than the curve of the body and on a different axis I suspect that this is to allow a slight degree of "Fiddle Factor" in aligning the joints. It makes the alignment of the joints less dependant on the precise thickness of the cork on the fishtail. Just a thought.

It prevents damage if the joints are put together carelessly without holding down the upper joint ring. In my experience it didn’t make a whole lot of difference to the need to line things up properly to ensure a working long Bb.

That's the earlier style keywork (pre-200000 serial numbers).

B&H keywork was changed in the very late '50s to having the long Bb link flipped over with the flared ramp on the RH rings and straight-sided piece on the RH2 ring key as well as a single trill key guide, longer C#/G# key and the trill key flat springs weren't recessed into the undersides. Acton vents came in later on in the '60s and were standard throughout the '70s until production ceased in 1984 (serial numbers in the 560000s to 590000s).

Peter Eaton keywork is largely based on '80s 1010 keywork even with the hollows on the undersides of the LH levers, but is mostly single piece castings (eg. pad cups cast as single pieces along with the cup arms) instead of being made from drop forged pieces all silver soldered together. The Acton vent has gone and some keys have been beefed up compared to 1010 keywork, but they still have that annoying sliding F#/C# linkage. I fit a nylon tipped adjusting screw to it for easier and much better adjustment as well as being safe in the knowledge nothing's going to fall off.
