Hey all I finally found a dirt cheap A-key clarinet at an estate sale, a Penzel-Mueller serial number T 65XX. Wood is in good shape. Seems to just need new pads. Anything you can tell me about it's value? Are these any good? Looks way cool with the wrap around register, the kind with the straight bar in the middle rather than full curve. Some moths seem to have hitchhiked along with it and I need to get rid of them before anything.

If it is from "That site", I would not say its dirt cheap.
If it is sold by a music store, it is probably its retail price.
Clarinet that old most likely would not p,ay well in tune, it has a leaf spring under F/C# key so I don't k now how well that key would move.
Tone holes most likely are not in best shape either so to make it hold pressure and suction could be difficult even after complete repad.

Well, I got it at an estate sale for almost nothing. I replaced three missing pads and was able to get it playing enough to try it and it plays very well in tune. But yeah I think one or two tone holes needs adjusted. I was wondering how long the barrel is supposed to be? It's shorter than a Bb barrel and I have to pull it out a quarter inch to get the horn in tune. But once it's in tune, it has very good intonation and very good sound. There are no cracks in the wood at all. I'm not asking with any intention to resell it because I'm definitely keeping it. But just curious as to it's value. Thanks for your response.

Re: resale value: you can do a search of past sales on eBay to get an idea.
If it plays well it may "deserve" a custom- made barrel so you would not have to pull out so much, or just use tuning rings.

I can use longer barrel, just curious why it would have a 60mm barrel. There's none in past listings but a current one listed for 500. Thanks for the info.

Original owner may have cut the barrel to tune to 442 or 444 Hz, which is what is commonly being tuned to in Europe.
