Just received Clark W Fobes 10K in a long facing 2L. I love his CF+, been playing his CWF pretty exclusively, but this 2L is absolutely marvelous! Total control, ppp to a thunderous FFF, maintains a dark, ringing sound. Lovely with new Legere Euro-Cut reeds!

Wow, looks cool. However the rails are unusually wide. Is the articulation OK on this one? Does this produce enough projection for larger ensembles?

No articulation issues, and, if not careful - can scream over the ensemble!

I concur. I've been playing on my new 10K and it is lovely, especially when coupled with his (Fobes) barrel.

The only photo showing the rail width is out of focus and this part is blurry and might give a wrong impression.

I think this 10K would be okay for jazz, but I've already enjoyed several orchestra gigs and a couple chamber jobs with it. Blends well, and when you "push down on the pedals" really soars out and over an ensemble!

Agreed! I love the 10K and the European Cut works PERFECTLY with the 10k! The sound is amazing and I was ecstatic to know that the European cut works with it. It also works with the D'Addario Reserve mouthpiece.
If the Signatures don't work use the Europeans!

Hello Agomondo.
I've just acquired a 10K and would like to try the Legere Europeans. Can I ask what strength you use? Thanks

I migrated away from Vandoren Rue 56 3.5 to the Legere Signature European-Cut 3-1/4, and use those pretty exclusively, with several 3-1/2s just in case. All quite lovely. With this piece being the 2L (1.04 tip, 18 curve) - a more Germanic type lay, the 3-1/4 plays pretty much effortlessly!

Thanks Ken. I have the closer tip version so will give the 3.5 / 3.75's a go.

@Presto
Of course! I use the 3.5s. Though I set it a little high on the mouthpiece. Dan Sagi told me that Legere reeds are designed to be put a little above the tip of the mouthpiece, but who knows right? Guy Legere keeps changing his reed design!

Has anyone tried the new 1L facing Clark Fobes made for this mouthpiece? I'm curious about it, since it's quite close/long. (Not quite as close as the CWF and CF, which I've played — currently playing the CF — but it's the closest facing he offers with an 18mm length.)

When ordering my 2L - I originally thought I would like a 1L - since I've been playing the CWF. Talking with Clark, I went with the 2L, and am quite glad I did! With the longer lay, the 2L plays effortlessly, and I believe the 1L would have seemed too closed.

I'm sorry, maxopf, that I can't give an answer to your question, but I'm interested in the CF myself, so I'd like to ask you: which reeds have you found to work best on the CF?
Thanks very much!!

Hi samoma1, I'm currently using V12 #4 reeds on the CF, which work great. I was also using V12 #3.5+ for quite a while.
(I'm using the San Francisco CF by the way, not the 10K CF. I'm guessing the 10K version would require more or less the same reeds.)
@KenJarczyk, interesting! When I have the chance to try the 10K, I'll try both the 1L and 2L. I also want to compare my San Francisco CF with the 10K CF.
I'm holding off on trying mouthpieces until I get to college in a couple of months — I don't want to end up buying a new mouthpiece right now, only to find out my professor wants me to switch to a different one. Plus I'm quite happy with my CF; just curious to try the new model.

I don't post on the forum often but this new 10K mouthpiece is worth a shout out. I ended up getting 3 of them to try. 2 blue marble which were a CF+ and 2L, and 1 CF+ hard rubber. I had a few conversations with Clark about the differences between the blue and hard rubber. He said the blue is a tiny bit brighter. After playing these pieces I can say for me the blue CF+ is my personal winner, its more focused and centered but not edgy in any way. Like many of you I have a good collection of custom mouthpieces and after about 3 weeks of playing these pieces they are now my favorite mouthpiece ever. The blue marble is a joy to play. Its even from top to bottom and has no problem going over any break in the clarinet. This new blank that is made to his specs is perfect for what Clark wants to do.... in my opinion its way better than any other model Clark sells, and I have 4 of them.
I recommend the 10k to anyone... I think its a groundbreaking design.

In the pics the tip rail seems wide, but the pic is also a little out of focus. For anyone who has experience with these, is the tip rail or side rails wider than typical? Other mouthpieces I have played of Clark's usually have narrow to medium rails.

Yeah, the rails, tip and side, are wider than the one I play on. I got a black 10K over the Internet a couple years ago, and it had wide rails and was too restrictive for me to play on. I had the delightful opportunity a couple months ago to try out eight or nine Fobes mouthpieces with the facing length and opening I usually play on, both 10K and Zinner, and ended up with the lone blue 10K, which is quite a lot different from the one I had before. It was a surprise; I mentioned the other one, and he said the 10Ks have changed noticeably over time. The new one has rails roughly similar to the Europas, and all the 10Ks I tried recently had similar rails to the Zinners. He also said that the blue material seems to have different acoustic properties, and has become one of his most popular offerings. Mine continues to be outstanding, and popular in groups. The tuning's also great. An important takeaway, though, is that there's no substitute for trying out a lot of them in person.
