I haven't posted here for years!
I bought a Normandy Eb on eBay a few years ago and only started playing it seriously a few weeks ago. It's fun. In our orchestra we're playing Hary Janos. The Eb part is not large; of course it is exposed, it is high, and it is doubled by two piccolos!
I bought a Backun barrel. Cocobolo. I think I like it. But there are a million variables, aren't there? At NAMM, I tooted on the Buffets, R13 and Devine, I think, and on the Selmer Recital, and on the Uebel. What I needed to do was bring all four home and spend hours on Altissimo and learn how to play the Eb clarinet.
Anyway, I'm having fun, intonation is difficult, but I'll keep at it.
I'm just chattering, I know, but I have learned one discouraging thing. The Backun barrel has a flat spot that allows use of clarinet reeds. I thought that had to be a great small feature, since I have lot's of clarinet reeds including Legere, and I don't want to have to saw them all up just to try them. But my mouthpiece is the Clark Fobes San Francisco and his table is a lower height than the Backun flat spot. Who would have thought?
Still just chattering, but maybe I'll buy a new mouthpiece........

Ask Backun if you can exchange? or have a wood worker take some off? I have the same barrel and my regular good Bb reeds also work as-is on by great Lelandaise mouthpiece.

Admit I've never heard of the Backun barrel with the flat spot. I used a Buffet Eb and just the stock Buffet mouthpiece. I miss playing Eb a lot as it's been a long time since I last played it in an orchestra or band.

I started playing the Eb almost 2 years ago. After trying to play both the Bb and the Eb in the same rehearsals, I decided to try the Legere reeds on the Eb. Works great! The Backun barrels I tried did not fit on my Eb, but I did cut down a couple Bb reeds to use. They were ok. I've used Rico Grande Concert and Gonzales Eb reeds. I now prefer the Legere to cane for my Eb. I enjoy playing the Eb. Fingerings for upper Altissimo are interesting.. Have to experiment. That and just the ability to adjust your embouchure. Isn't it great though? But you do end up feeling very exposed.

One thing I would recommend is the Fobes extension for the Eb as it makes the 12ths much more in tune even on my Buffet Prestige. You might check with Clark whether that will fit on a Normandy model first.
I use cut down Bb reeds. What I've found is that if I really break in a reed on Bb I then saw the but down (or cut with scissors) that this reed works great on Eefer. Right now I'm using Steur 3 1/2s or Silversteins.
Peter Hadcock's excerpt book has lots of extra fingerings for Eb. Very valuable. You can sometimes get a note up to pitch by adding the RH sliver key
Harry Janos is fun. Getting the high notes with the piccolos is no easy task. Of course getting two piccolos in tune is not easy either!!

Thanks, all! I bought a Van Doren 5RV and for now am using Legere clarinet reeds.
The Normandy is ok for me, without spending any more, but I sure don't like the nickel plated keys. It's hard enough finding the fingerings without my fingers slipping so! Thanks for the Kodaly moral support, EbClarinet1!
