 symptom of aging #17
Author: Philip Caron

Apparently at age 63 my body's covering is dryer. Twice in about a week I've gotten a nosebleed during practice and had to stop to plug the leak.

The first time I didn't notice it right off. I've been having occasional minor post-nasal drip (symptom # 11), and was sort of ignoring the sensation of moisture in that area. Didn't realize it was dripping until my thumb started sliding around on the thumb hole, whereupon I was aghast to discover that my clarinet was covered in blood. Some on my clothes too. I had to take care of the bleed first, then come back and tackle cleanup. What a mess - pads, tone holes, keys, lig, etc.

It is winter; I had the problem a couple times last winter too. May be time to get a humidifier.

Ugh! As Mom used to say, "Getting old ain't for sissies!" Aching joints, dry skin, dry sinuses... Philip...maybe try some saline nasal spray. It's just water and salt and is very effective (and harmless) for treating dry nasal passages. I use it in the winter from time to time when it feels like I've been living in the middle of the Sahara.

Are you taking blood thinners? Apirin Coumadin, Plavix and Elequis have all given me nose bleeds.

Low humidity can dry out nasal passages. A simple cold-mist humidifier is all I need, or you can even boil a pot of water on the stove once a day.

Any drug store or walk-in clinic will have a plastic pincher that squeezes your nose to let the bleeding clot.

Or go to an ENT doctor, who will cauterize the spot that bleeds.

Getting old sucks. Then you die. ;-)
