Hi everyone! I am trying to find out when my clarinet was made. I purchased it second hand in 2006. I tried to look up the serial number online, but couldn't find it. I also posted in Reddit, and they directed me to this group. It's a Selmer 10G. The serial number is F1171. I have photos attached. Any details you might be able to give me would be helpful! Thank you.

Someone may have a more accurate answer but I purchased mine new in '76 for $750.00. It was a new model at that time and I think Selmer made them for at least five years before they moved to what they called the 10S.

I've seen quite a few threads on 10G's. It seems that the F-series was a nice batch of them, but I don't know the ages. I think you might benefit from searching this site for serial lists!

The most accurate way is to cut the barrel and count the rings.

lydian "The most accurate way is to cut the barrel and count the rings."
And by that, I'm guessing somewhere around the early to mid 1990s.

I believe a F series Selmer would be 1989, give or take a year. I used to own a pair of 10Gs that were D & E series and dated to 1985 & 1987.

F1171 is from either the second half of 1992 or the first half of 1993. Since it's an "early F1000s" number it's almost certainly 1992.

Clarnibass: I'm curious where you got your information, and how you end up with a date that's later than I expected. I reasoned as follows: I know that B series was 1980/81 (http://www.woodwindforum.com/clarinetperfection/selmer-paris/), and I own a Q series Selmer that I know was made in 2009. So basically that's a new letter every 2 years, suggesting that F would be 1988/89 (and this 2 years to a letter matches the info in clarinetperfection, with Z series in 1976/77, A in 1978/79, and B in 1980/81). To get to F in 1992/93 the C/D/E series must have lasted for an unusual period.
