Regarding the contralto and contrabass clarinets, were they each made in two different versions--one going down to low D, and down to low C?

Leblanc made them in long form to low Eb and in paperclip form to low D and also low C.

Early Leblanc Eb contras (to Eb) were made in a compact bass clarinet form. I've only seen one of them. Later they went to a straight form for the model to Eb and a paperclip form for those to C.
Their straight BBb contras went down to Eb. The early paperclips went down to D, and they later added an extra length of pipe (and two thumb keys) to extend the range to C.
