I thought of this as I prepare for summer festival applications in which I am required to include samples of chamber music performances apart from solo performances.
Brahms' Clarinet Sonatas and Schumann's Fantasy Pieces or Romances are to me considered chamber music because of the intimate nature of the music and the context in which these pieces were written. In what context is the clarinet-piano duo not a chamber group, besides the concerto-reduction relationship?
What about works like Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale performed without narration and play? Are there small ensemble works that are not considered chamber music?
Do you consider performing New York Counterpoint against a tape that you recorded and mixed by yourself chamber music?
... are 4 computers playing music together in a shared space considered chamber music?
Maybe I'm digressing.

Dear SL,
While I agree with you that Brahms clarinet sonatas should not be considered solo works, I doubt that an admission committee would agree.
If you want to be safe, I'd say at least 3 human players in a live performance situation would qualify.
But frankly if you have any doubts, why not contact the summer festivals you are applying to directly? They are the ones that matter not the contributors of this board.

I'd say that if a piece is to be performed with one player (or computer) on each part, it's chamber music. If a conductor is needed, it's music for chamber orchestra.
Agree with Sylvain: if you're in doubt as to whether a particular piece is appropriate for an audition, it can't hurt to ask.

Some people consider a piece for clarinet and pn as chamber music but some do not. I think the Stravinsky would be for sure. Trios, Quartets, Quintets etc. Even the Mozart - Beethoven Octets are chamber music but they probably want smaller ensemble so the clarinet plays a more dominant roll. If you send the Brahams and Stravinsky in make sure you also submit a trio or quintet as well, Bruch, Mozart or Brahms or similar. Or a famous wind quintet like the Hindmith, Ibert or Barber etc.
