From what I've known Buffet makes their A Basset clarinet, F Basset horn, and Bass clarinets with the RC Prestige bore. Recently I heard from another player on another forum that his bass clarinet has a R13 Prestige bore, which I've never heard of. Is that true that Buffet offers their low clarinets in R13 bores as well? Or as an custom order only?

Since the R13 bore for a soprano is 'species specific,' I think the designation anywhere else in the family of clarinets would be only for marketing purposes. When you are buying the top of the line Buffet bass, it is a Prestige (for marketing purposes).

They used to call their Prestige bad the RC Prestige (pre-1999), but it's just Prestige now. I don't know how different (if at all different) the Tosca bass bore is compared to the Prestige.
My basset horn has the RC badge on it.

Hey there HANGERDUDE!
It's pretty tough to assign an "RC" or "R13" label to Buffet's low harmony horns. In a super-technical since the bores on the low instruments are neither; they have individual bores to meet the specific needs of each instrument's range.
In a more practical sense, however, these low harmony clarinets are designed to produce a very fluid sound that is closer to the RC than the R13 (hence they were labeled as "RC Prestige"). Buffet doesn't offer "R13" versions of the bass/alto/basset etc.
Chris, the Tosca bore is totally different. It's, well, Tosca-ish.

I don't think any of the larger clarinets have anything more than a purely cylindrical bore with no expansion at the top end or flaring from the low F# tonehole downwards - the only basses I've seen that do have a clarinet-style bore with the flaring in the lower part of the lower joint were B&H Imperial basses.

Ummm well, for what it's worth I have first hand experience with 4 Buffet Prestige Bass clarinets here in NZ
Andrews one- marked "RC Prestige" (had extra work at the factory, plus was re-bored/overhauled by Buffet after about 10 years of play)
Maurices one- marked "RC Prestige"
Elsas one- marked "R13 Prestige"
APO one (bought from Switzerland I think, and had zillions of extra bits added by a European custom dude) - "R13 Prestige"
APO "old one" (reccently stolen actually)- marked "RC Prestige"
They all play differently, I've not played Andrew's one much, but have done many gigs using the others (not owning a low C bass myself, I've long-term borrowed these) and would say that the two RC's are similar, and the two R13s were similar in some respects (one being seriously customised makes comparision a bit dubious)
I'm not making this up, just passing on what I know to be true.

Donald -
Any chance for a photo of the "APO one" showing the "zillions of extra bits"?

Compared to the 1999 instruments onwards, the previous versions had zillions of extra bits over complicating the entire double speaker mechanism and RH3 mechanism which thankfully have since been simplified.

Chris, also the Tosca bass has a more focussed sound than the Prestige.

Also that right thumb Low D key on the Prestige was also replaced by an Eb key on the Tosca bass.
