I haven't checked Russell Harlow's Clarinet Central site for a couple of months .. and whoa! He has a recording of McLane's first rehearsal of the Copland with piano!

George Silfies studied with McLane; George certainly had the timbre, even in high school. Julius Karner , also in high school,was another with a beautiful timbre. Julius had a career in the military.

thanks so much for this! I suppose to real McLane cognoscenti, this stuff is old hat, but I'm really glad to get the Copland, rough as it is. The movie of McLane is a blast too.

Yes, thanks kchan, most interesting. Regarding the Copland reading: There's something about old recordings that I like. On this one the speed problems with the tape recorder result in an exaggerated vibrato effect. I'd like to know how one might extract the sound clips as they don't seem to be available elsewhere.

Bob, I've heard Audacity is a free download and lets you copy stuff like this.
But if you have a Mac, you might check out Audio Hijack Pro, which I've used for years--it records ANY audio on your computer whatsoever--from DVDs, from streaming internet, from web pages, from whatever--and lets you save it as mp3, AIFF, Apple Lossless, blah blah blah. It costs something like $35, and comes with a companion editing program called Fission. (Available at Rogue Amoeba, and no, I don't get a toaster if enough people buy it.)
It ain't ProTools, but the 2 programs are incredibly handy. (At this point, Mac only, sorry to say.) There's probably an equivalent program for PC, but I don't know what it might be.
