I have found discussions here about waxing or not waxing the exterior of a wood clarinet relating to allowing the surface to breathe. I have also found comments that manufacturers use filler to fill grain and/or hide defects in the wood. Does anyone know what sort of filler is used that does not seal the surface of the wood?

I have not read or heard any proof one way or another about waxing the exterior. I use Renaisannce Wax on the exterior of my wood clarinets and have not noticed any adverse effects. My personal opinion about "breathing" is that it's another old story. No info. on fillers used.

Many clarinets including professional models have been made with a varnished finish that would be far more impervious than any filler and that doesn't seem to cause any problems.

Wurlitzer lacquer the bore on their clarinets and Schreiber use black paint on the outside on their Buffet E11s - they still do on the student line Buffet oboes (which also have a resin lined bore).

My reference to waxing or not waxing the clarinet came from a discussion I found when searching this site for information about using fillers for covering flaws in the wood. Renaisannce Wax is great stuff and I use it on many things. What I am more interested in is if anyone knows what kind of filler manufacturers use to cover the flaws in the wood. For example, there was a posting in the last few weeks saying that one contributer has a clarinet with a knot in a joint. There have also been many posts with the claim that manufacturers use filler to cover open grain on the exterior of a clarinet. In my wood shop, I would use sanding sealer, but it is unlikely that is what they would use. I'm just being curious. I'm also thinking about some play time with a beat up junker.
