I will be applying to colleges for clarinet this year. So far I'm applying to NEC, Eastman, Oberlin, University of Michigan, Northwestern, and Peabody. Considering all of these are very competitive schools, I would like to have some sort of a safety school. Are there any schools that still have great clarinet teachers but are not as competitive as the ones mentioned?

Yes, Nygren is still at KSU. Along with Prof. Vardi who, I hear, is also quite good. No experience myself, it's all hearsay.

Dr. Nygren is retired from Kent State University.
At least when when I talked to him last week
