I reckon you ought to play two pieces from two contrasting eras to be on the safe side, so pick either one of these and something else that's much earlier.

Both are self contained contrasting solos (if you're talking a standard audition).

You basically want FAST and SLOW as contrasts. Slow, to show of your rhythm, sustainment of phrases, rhythm, articulation prowess, rhythm, basically anything musical, and did I mention rhythm? Fast is there to make sure you don't trip over your fingers at a decent speed.


Of course it would be nice to have something "modern" vs. a Classical or Romantic piece, but the above scenario is more important than your knowledge of music history.

Yes, of course the are. They are so different in style and texture they make excellent contrasts. There is no comparison between the two composers works in general, especially these two pieces.

I've used those two pieces in auditions when 'contrasting' is called for many many times. They are definitely contrasting, and if done well, will show a lot of technique and musicality.
