Best G# to throat A trill
Author: Garth Libre
Date:   2013-08-02 21:49

When doing the Rose Etude 3 of the 32, we start out with a throat G# to A trill. Reaching over to the A key while holding the Ab closed with the crook of the index finger is acceptable. Is there a better one?

Ridenour may describe it his opus on fingerings.

Reaching for the A key is a bit too awkward for me. I use the regular G#key and trill with the octave key. It may or may not be in tune on your instrument, but it works nicely on mine. You can also use the 3rd right hand trill key.

Rose 32/3 is marked Andante Sostenuto. The trill is also andante and sostenuto. It mustn't be lazy, but it mustn't be fast, either. No faster than, say, 32nd notes.

Move your wrist so your fingers point more across the clarinet than down, and use the first joint of your left index finger to open the G# key. This will let you use the second joint rather than the fingertip joint to make the trill.

Use the three left-hand exercises in the Langenus Method, part 3 to limber up your throat tone technique.

I believe a good visual example of what Ken explained can be seen in
Tom Puwalski's U tube video.
Therein, he plays the Rose 32/3 and his left index finger position is clearly visible.

(don't know how to do the link thing but you can copy/paste this....)

This trill can be executed effectively by using the thumb on the Gsharp key and then trilling the A key with the index finger.

It really shouldn't be a problem anchoring the index finger firmly against the G# key and trilling with the second joint of that finger. Maybe because I'm a lefty I find that so easy to do. Practice it, it might come in handy.
