The question is: are there any competitions for adults that allow woodwinds in the US or in North America?
Seems like they're all for students.

Thanks for the snarkiness, Alex.
I'm more thinking concerto competitions... something along the lines of a Van Cliburn but broader than piano.

Not that I know of.
To expand on my previous comment...
I've always seen contests as a sort of pedagogical exercise, to encourage students to practice with some sort of goal. A crutch for those without self-direction. Beyond a certain level of skill and maturity, it becomes the musician's own prerogative to find and create their own musical opportunities.
Given the high level of many performers out there, a fully open competition would have a fatal problem, in that it would at some level be implicitly intended for amateurs and semi-pros, but also quite easy for a pro to be a ringer. It's like America's Got Talent and similar shows... a professional performer could likely sweep the whole contest, but it would be considered bad form. It always seems in very poor taste when a contestant is on that program who already has their own show (even if it's a show that's not doing that great). So where do you draw the line?

I tend to agree with Alex. Perhaps there are special competitions for soloist clarinetists out there but I haven't heard of any. The goal of most clarinetists is to be able to play with a good ensemble and one achieves this by competing in auditions to gain entry. These days the competition to join even amateur groups can be pretty fierce once you get above the community band level.

Since no one seems able or willing to answer the question...
Off the top of my head: Young Concert Artists in New York City, Astral Artists Competition in Philadelphia, Ima Hogg Concerto Competition in Houston, Coleman, Fischoff, plus a whole slew of regional orchestra concerto competitions.
I believe these all have some sort of age limit, so I suppose it depends on what you consider "adult."
You could always spend some time with google to find more info...

One of the benefits of this BBoard is access to people who would know. Saves me the trouble of spending time sifting through search results.
Thanks for answering the question.

I seem to recall Sean Osborne saying something to the effect of "apparently they prefer people who play wrong notes".

That's exactly the problem with adult competitions. There's this imaginary ceiling of how good you're allowed to be before you're considered a pro, therefore a ringer, and either out of consideration or given "aw, come on, let the sweeties try for it, don't spoil their fun" looks. It's not about who plays it best, just who dances the line of "person who plays the best but looks like an underdog".
It becomes a whole big sham (though that's my opinion of all musical contests, but another discussion).
